From the peak of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, it’s possible to glimpse all four provinces of Ireland. As the mist gradually clears, the small farms tucked among their foothills begin to emerge. This is where Border Collies cajole Suffolk sheep beneath wide open skies and a bowl of Irish stew is always beckoning from slate-floored kitchens.
Farming in these mountains is a testament to tradition that stands the test of time. Just ask fifth-generation farmers Ray Cuddy and Thomas Ryan, cousins who hail from the parish of Camross.
“It’s hard work but it's a nice peaceful sort of life,” says Thomas, who also works in forestry. “There’s a huge pride among the farming families in the mountains. We’re loyal to our hurling club, our parish and our families.”
